Crap! My beast doesn’t shift!
I have a horrible habit of reading something and when I get to a part I find interesting, I stop reading. I stop to think about what I found so interesting, or implement what I was reading, or tell someone else about it. Whatever… I completely stop and my mind is off on a tangent. I’m not talking about when I’m reading a book, but other things, like emails. I can’t say how many times I’ve responded to an email without first reading the entire message. I’d say 95% of the time I do this and then go back to read the entire message. Needless to say this can cause some problems and many additional responses on my part.
My bad habit came back to really bite me in the butt yesterday. Since January 2nd I’ve been working on a new story. It’s part of an Amber Pax for Amber Quill. With a Pax, the authors involved are given a basic premise and we take it from there. The premise isn’t long or complicated, but it’s there to keep a thread of continuity in case the reader buys all five stories in a bundle called an Amber Pax. The reader can also buy single stories, but it’s a good deal to buy five.
The story I started January 2nd is supposed to go through final manuscript phase by January. It’s not totally my fault I fell behind, I started the story in December and these girls suggested I put that story aside to make it into a bigger story. So I had to start over. I finished it Saturday night and printed it out. Proofed and edited it and then sent it off to the martini girls. Then while I had a few minutes to spare and since I have this new computer, I decided to make a list of the projects I have coming due in the next few months.
It was then I discovered I’d erred… I thought the story was about a beast master…true enough. But it was primarily supposed to be about a shape shifter who controlled his beast. My beast master didn’t shift. Crap!
I spent yesterday trying to get my character to shift. Maybe next time I’ll read, really read the premise? I sent it off to the girls late last night. If you hear them complaining, you’ll know why.

I’ve so done that a thousand times. My habit is responding in emails and then realizing I’ve skimmed the note. I’ve been completely off topic. Well it’s nice to know I’m not alone with bad reading habits. Thanks for sharing.
