This last weekend, I was in downtown
Well, we had a wonderful crowd show up and many were dying to read what our authors had to write. This year we were lucky enough to have a cover model, CJ, show up and take photos. A steady stream of people came to get a photo with him. His hair was amazing! I’ve never had it down to my waist in my life. The atmosphere was wonderful, filled with laughter and camaraderie, and it made me realize how lucky I am to call myself a writer.

I blogged on my site (isabellaclayton.com) about my wonderful experience at the Chocolate Affaire event. Even though it was only held on Friday and Saturday (it’s usually 3 days) we still had a lot of readers come by and enjoy the workshops or buy our books. The best part is when Cerreta’s candy people came by and gave us chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate of every kind–Sinful :)).
Special thanks to CJ Hollanbach - a Romance model - who had a long line of women, girls and believe it or not men who wanted autographs, pictures and to touch his hair (amongst other things). He was a great sport and a truly nice guy.
I stayed at the Gas Light Inn in downtown Glendale. When you walk in the place it has an old 1920’s feel and architecture. Although the owners said the place was empty when they bought it, they’ve done a great job with the restoration. Every Friday and Saturday, they have jazz playing to a packed house. If I closed my eyes, I could envision an old speak easy with the mob at special tables, a back room and a singer’s voice touching each soul.
My room was decorated with Victorian lace and pictures of women in gardens with lots of flowers, the Amethyst room had a beautiful large 4 poster bed and chaise lounge all in dark amethyst fabric, other rooms had cozy country french designs. The long narrow wood stairway to the second floor (no elevator) leads past some more rooms and then to a terrace - great view.
On Tuesday, Judi McCoy came and spoke to the Valley of the Sun Romance Writers about re-inventing yourself. It was an awesome talk about her journey in the contemporary writing world. We all love what we write about and when it’s time to change it can be painful. She shared how she got started with her voice, the stories she loved to write and how it lead to her current project of the dog mysteries. Re-invention for some can also be exciting. Especially if you’ve been writing one genre for a long time and want to dabble in another. I wish Judi luck in her new writing and can’t wait for her book!!!!

I’ve set myself some pretty good goals for 2008 and some even loftier goals to be achieved by 2010.
First, an update. I lost 10 pounds in January! At this rate I am going to look amazing in my Faery outfit for RT. 2 more months, another 10 pounds a month, I’ll be right back where I wanted to be, and in better shape than I’ve been in years.
Heart of Glass, my November 2007 release made the top 10 bestseller list at Whiskey Creek Press Torrid. This is the 2nd consecutive month my titles have made the top 10.
The same title received a 4 star review in Romantic Times Magazine, the review will be published in the March 2008 edition, along with my ad.
On the writing side, I’ve been slacking. Not a single word written since January 5th. I did not meet my goal of 3 submissions for January, but will strive to make it happen in Feb. I sat at the computer last night and opened my current work in progress. Not a bad story if I do say so myself. Whether a publisher thinks so is entirely another story. Hope to blog about “the call” here soon. J
Anyway, I digress. I opened the document and began to edit chapter 1, again. Now, this can be a good thing or this can be considered destructive. In this case, it’s destructive. How am I ever going to progress and write the rest of the book if I’m hung up on editing the first chapter? Answer: I’m not.
I need to back up for a moment and tell you where I found my motivation again. I spent the weekend at the Glendale Chocolate Affaire and shared a tent with 26 other romance authors in various stages of their writing careers. Everyone from self published to USA Today best sellers gathered to autograph their books and chat with people. They were the friendliest and nicest group I’ve had the pleasure of spending a solid 48 hours with. This event which happens the first weekend in February, every year, was the key. The spark to relight my writing flame.
I brought my laptop to work with me today and spent my lunch hour writing. I only managed to eke out 2 pages, but, and this is a big but (pardon the pun) they were 2 NEW pages. Maybe that 2010 goal I set isn’t so lofty after all.
What rekindles your writing flame when the fire goes out?
IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU is the Reader’s Choice winner of the Brava Novella Contest.
I wish Sylvia Day would make a winner button… She was the Reader’s Choice winner in 2004 and made the finalist buttons.
What a great two days. I learned Cave Creek Cowboy Ménage is the number 1 bestseller for Amber Quill Heat and number 4 for Amber Allure. This is my first foray onto the Allure list, so I’m delighted with the great news…a special thanks to everyone who bought a copy.
The Blood Club was released on the 26th of January but made both bestsellers lists too. Number 7 on Amber Heat and number 6 on Amber Allure.
