Writing Romance by Vanessa Grant, 309 pages
Self-Council Press, 2007
ISBN: 1551807394

If you’re just starting out in the romance genre, Writing Romance is a good place to start. The author, Vanessa Grant, has over 9 million books in print and has written 25 Harlequin romances, so she has the experience and publications to know what she is talking about.

Writing Romance delves into several topics of interest. The author touches on many of the basics regarding telling vs. showing, viewpoint, pacing, plotting and conflict. Ms. Grant uses her own work as examples.

For advanced writers, you might glean some new information, but basically this book is for the beginner. Also, this is specifically tailored for the romance writer. There is also useful information for any genre writer though.

I can see why this title has been updated. This edition includes much more on the internet and its resources.

Can a House come alive?

Don’t go running for the phone just yet. A padded cell isn’t in my future. Let me give some history and seriously I want an answer from you.

I’ve lived in this house for 14 years. Some of it happy times and some of it really hard times. I’m the original owner and I think it was a bunch of orange groves before the development. I chose the house and my ex-husband wasn’t sure. I won. I loved it from the first time I saw its open spaces, great architectural elements, and its coziness.

Over the years I decorated it, updated it and put my heart into it. I thought I would stay there for the rest of my life. A lot of people know I’m sensitive and have seen some things in the house. Some of it good and some of it bad. Remember, I see things no matter where I go so this was normal to me.

During my marriage, my husband started getting into the occult with me. One time he told me that while he laid in bed, he would let this energy into him. That freaked me out. He doesn’t know if it’s good or bad and he definitely didn’t know how to control it.

I asked him to stop and he didn’t. Other events like buying a human skull from eBay also freaked me out. So here I’m putting positive energy into the house and my ex-husband is putting negative energy into the house. He did lot’s of other crap but it’s not about him. Maybe another story and another place.

Well, over time the house never lost its charm but the marriage did. As a lot of people these days I got a divorce. I bought him out of his half of the house and moved back in.

I started to fix it up but something didn’t quite feel right. For one year, I stayed in boxes and only decorated my office. The house felt different. And I can absolutely feel the difference between past issues with the marriage and my feelings for where I lived. So something was making me go hmmmmm?

Well, I finally decided to sell the house. It’s a beautiful house and I still love it. It just needs a happy couple to give it love. This brings me to the question, is it alive?

When I moved back in, I got the feeling of someone watching me. It permeated the house, every room, nook and cranny. It didn’t feel bad so I didn’t pay much attention to it. When I moved out recently and a series of events have taken place that now has me thinking is this the houses way of holding on to me.

Everyone room in my house is painted a different color. When buyers come in to look at it they can’t get past the color and look at the bones. Even real estate people. This wasn’t odd until events keep occurring.

A 17 year old kid tried to do a fish tail with his truck on the street and failed the attempt. He hit my block wall with his truck. My house runs parallel with the street and is sooooo hard to hit. Almost impossible. I have to keep going back to the house to deal with police, insurance and now contractors.

While I was there cleaning up a few things I found a small section of the wood floor had warped. My neighbor helped me find the problem. A washer from the refrigerator water facet was leaking. I’ve repaired the leak, but now have to repair the floor.

I also hired a painter to paint the entire inside of the house. It was like the 3 stooges painted my house. Thank God he wasn’t that far and I fired him. Due to money, I now have to paint the rest of the house myself.

Now I don’t believe I have had bad luck because I have a great life. I love every minute and getting up every day. I think the house is alive and is trying to hold on to me. What do you think? Do you think a house can come alive and try to hold on to its owners?

If anyone saw the Stephen King movie Rose Red, you might agree with me. The King movie showed the house as being alive in a vampirism kind of way. Instead of small little issues like I have, the King movie sucked peoples souls into the house. Is that next, I wonder. lol. Hmmmmm

Historical Paranormal Celtic Romance
www.joynash.com

After generations of persecution, the Druids have returned to Avalon, conjuring a magical mist to shield their illegal haven from Roman eyes. When a rogue Roman sorcerer threatens the isle’s secrecy, Gwendolyn, the chosen successor to Avalon’s Guardian, turns to forbidden power in an effort to save the Druids from discovery. Crucial to her plans is Marcus Aquila, the handsome Roman blacksmith who once saved her life. But Gwen, a shapeshifter, cannot fully control the wolf within her soul. The beast threatens the tentative love she and Marcus have forged. And what of the sword of Deep Magic they’ve created together…will it be Avalon’s salvation…or its downfall?

DEEP MAGIC follows THE GRAIL KING (Romantic Times’ Best Historical Fantasy of 2006). A previous title, CELTIC FIRE (a 2004 Golden Heart Finalist) is a “prequel” to the Druid series, and introduces some of the characters who appear in later books.

Joy’s contemporary paranormal romances for Dorchester include the USA Today Bestseller IMMORTALS: THE AWAKENING and the upcoming IMMORTALS: THE CROSSING (Oct 2008).

Way to go Joy! Cyber toast to your success.
