Why I flew a black flag outside my house this weekend.

Well, last weekend was fairly uneventful, except that I did manage to get through the first stage of closing out the preliminary round of the Hot Prospects Contest. Woo Hoo! And a huge congratulations to all of the finalists and good luck in the final round of judging…hope you all get requests for fulls.

Now, since I didn’t really have anything exciting to blog about last week, I do have a cute tale for you about a near-miss incident that occurred on Saturday.

I had received a call from my aunt and an e-mail from our own Cassie Ryan and decided to kill two birds with one stone and hit my aunt’s yard sale on the way to Cassie’s book signing. And if the day worked out the way I hoped it would, I could kill a third bird with a working lunch.

So I grabbed a canvas bag that I got at the Heather Graham conference back in September and stuffed my laptop into it, fastened the snaps, and off I went. I had some ideas perking in my brain for the modern day fairy tale I’m writing and I was excited and distracted as I worked through them in my head.

Out the door I went with the black bag slung over my shoulder and fairy godmothers floating through my brain. My truck was parked in the driveway instead of the garage because I’d just come back from breakfast a short time before. So I crossed the front yard and rounded the front of the truck, hitting the button to unlock the door just as my neighbor hollered, “Good Afternoon,” over the fence while loading tack into his horse trailer. I replied, “Hey,” and pulled the truck door open. As I gently swung the bag off my shoulder and onto the back seat of the truck, I caught something out of the corner of my eye that was fluttering in the wind but attached to the bag. It was black, just like the bag, so I assumed maybe there was a strap or some flap that I hadn’t secured properly. I should have known better…after all, this is my life we’re talking about.

When I turned the bag over to see what it was, I found that something was actually stuck to the Velcro tabs on the bottom of the bag…something black just like the canvas bag, but soft and silky. So I worked it loose and stepped back as I held it up to the light to see what it was. Yep…my favorite black panties had just been flapping off the bottom of the bag like a flag in the wind as I crossed the front yard and said hello to the neighbor.

At this point, I turned and found him watching me with a smile on his face. Fortunately, his wife has him well trained and all he said was, “I’m not gonna ask,” as he turned and continued loading tack. I thought about stuffing the panties into my purse and continuing on, but decided that would just be tempting fate…remember the incident with the panties in the bar? No? Well, that’s another blog…search on “pantyline” and I think you’ll find it. Anyway, I hauled my little black panties (my story, I get to tell it my way) back into the house and safely stowed them in the hamper where they couldn’t re-attach themselves to any belts, straps, pant legs, or Velcro fasteners and make me the talk of the town as I worked my way through the day.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. Hold on tight now, ‘cuz we’re gonna go real, real fast.

Love ya,

Kayce

holidays getting near..means time to pull out the recipes ;-)

It’s the time of year that family comes to visit. Which means I have to pull out recipes. I am not much of a cook but I try to cook when the family comes over. So here are some of the tried and true recipes I use during the holidays ;-)
 CRANBERRY SALAD

1     13 oz.  can crushed pineapple
        1    6oz. Package lemon jello
        1     7 oz. ginger ale,
1    1 lb. Canned jellied cranberries
        1     2 oz. Cool whip
1    8 oz. Philadelphia cream cheese (softened)
1/2 cup walnuts or pecan (optional)

        1.      Drain pineapple, reserve liquid and add water to make 1 cup.  Heat to boiling, disolve jello in liquid.  Cool.
        2.      Stir in ginger ale and chill till partial set.  Meanwhile blend drained pineapple and jellied cranberry sauce, fold in gently the first mixture.  Put in a 9 x 9 x 2, and chill till firm.
        3.      Mix softened cheese and cool whip and blend well.  Spread over the top.
Optional: Toast nuts in 350 oven for 10 minutes with 1 tsp butter, cool, put on the top. (I have never put the nuts in this recipe)
Note:    I usually serve this on Christmas, with the Turkey.

November Already

It’s November everyone! So what does that mean? It means Turkey day is coming. Right? But while we’re all gathered around the table feasting on our turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, let’s not forget the real meaning of Thanksgiving. My family traditionally take turns around the table giving thanks for something or someone that we are especially thankful for and this year I’m thankful for so much in my life. First of all my family, of course, and the new baby that is coming, my dogs, Rocky and sweet little Tinker, my home, my friends, my writing partner and The Wild Rose Press and especially the Butterscotch Martini Girl’s, who God only knows where I’d be without, and last, but not least, pumpkin pie.

I love pumpkin pie. Which reminds me of the poem that is traditionally said every year by one of the grandkids during our dinner.

Thanksgiving Day is coming.
So Mr. Turkey said.
I must be very careful
Or I shall lose my head.

The pumpkin heard the turkey.
I’m frightened too, oh my.
They’ll mix me up with sugar and spice
And I’ll be pumpkin pie.

Did you know that the largest pumpkin pie ever baked was in 2005 and weighed 2,020 pounds. Dang, I think I gained weight just writing that sentence.

Here’s a pumpkin pie that my mother used to make. I call Marie Callender’s, but should you want to make your own…here ya go.

Pumpkin Pie- Arkansas Style

1 15-ounce can pumpkin
2/3 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ginger
3 slightly beaten eggs
1 5-ounce can evaporated milk
1/2 cup milk
Directions:
Line a 9-inch pie plate with pastry. Trim to ½ inch beyond edge of pie plate, then crimp edge as desired.
For filling, in a miximg bowl combine pumpkin, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Add eggs. Beat lightly with a rotary beater or fork just until combined. Gradually stir in evaporated milk and milk, then mix well.
Place the pastry-lined pie plate on the oven rack. Carefully pour filling into pastry shell.
Cover edge of the pie with foil, this will prevent overbrowning. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes. Remove foil. Bake about 25 minutes more or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
Serve with whipped cream.

Next week I’ll give you my sweet potato casserole recipe. And now I’m off to check on the Brava Contest website to see if they have posted any news about the contest. I’m a nervous wreck. I’ll be glad when they post the 20 finalists so I can quit stressing over it.

Have a wonderful week of writing.
Dani

Happy Friday

Hi everyone! I’m still in shock that it is already Friday again and October already zoomed by.

Anyway, November is shaping up to be a crazy/busy month for me. Not only am I trying to get Triangle of Seduction (the third in the Seduction series) done by the end of the year, but I have eight Pampered Chef shows scheduled so far in November. Great for my paycheck, but I have a feeling I’ll be exhausted at the end of November…LOL! (BTW, I will be having a Black Friday Pampered Chef sale if you are interested.)

But that also means that my brain is firmly entrenched in those two topics. So, instead of a deep, introspective post, you get my ramblings.

My agent called me a few weeks ago to tell me that sales for Ceremony of Seduction are doing very well, so you can bet I’m doing a happy dance! But there are still plenty of the books on shelves for you to go and pick up! If you would like to read an excerpt and see my book video - you can check out my website - www.cassieryan.com or my MySpace page - www.myspace.com/cassieryan44.

Just remember, this is a hot and steamy book and it will definitely heat up your weekend. I can’t tell you how many emails I’ve gotten from people who said they and their significant other read the book together and shared many…uh…”hot” hours of “closeness.”

On that note - I’m off to write and get going on my every growing To Do list.

Have a great weekend!!

Recommended Read - The Complete Idiot’s Guide: The Ultimate Reading List

The Complete Idiot’s Guide: The Ultimate Reading List by Shelley Mosley, John Charles, Joanne Hamilton-Selway, and Sandra Van Winkle is a comprehensive list of recommended reads. It’s perfect for someone who wants to try a new genre but doesn’t know where to start or if someone has read all the bestseller’s in a certain area but wants to delve deeper. It is also obvious these authors’ have done extensive research in coming up with such a comprehensive list.

The table of contents is clear and concise with each chapter on a different subject or genre. From true-crime, historical fiction and humor to romance and horror. Each section has a list of the classics and then recommended reads, and under each recommended book is a brief synopsis.

I dove into the romance section. The picks were perfect. French Silk by Sandra Brown. I loved that book, and of course Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught was listed. Actually, if this title had been missing I would not be able to recommend this book.

Other authors in the romance genre I hadn’t heard of. Examples are Eve Silver and her book Dark Desires and Date Me Baby, One More Time by Stephanie Rowe. Both books are on my must read list now.

I also spent tons of time in the horror section. I was glad to see so much more than Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I was pleased that Dead Until Dark by Charlene Harris was included under ‘More Great Reads’. Harris was one of my favorite new authors I discovered a couple of years back.

The only downfall to the book is that it is too short. I would love for the authors to have a book on each genre—one on romance, one on history, etc.

I do highly recommend this book. The authors have great taste, especially when I can’t really argue much with their recommendations. Who better to give advice than these authors who are all librarians with 75 years of combined experience? I don’t think anyone can top their wealth of knowledge on what people read and enjoy.
